This is a recently opened national historic site and we were underwhelmed. It needs more development. That being said it is a beautiful park and there is a lot of history in the area: the Algonquians, European settlers and Civil War soldiers have all been a part of Roanoke's history.
As for the lost colony, there is a marker near the site where Virginia Dare was born. There is a theatre company that has built a stage on the water's edge and they put on a production about the lost colony, but it is not currently showing until tourist season starts.
There is also a beautiful English garden that you can walk through.
